ENVIRONMENT (SMPE)
The students' movement for preservation of environment breathes a fresh air of freedom from conflicting ideals and ideas and calls for ‘Eco-culture’ ushering in a new era for human communities to live in a culture of their own, which will restore them to themselves. ‘Eco-culture’ is born today on this World Students’ Day for Environment.
5th of July is celebrated as WORLD STUDENTS' DAY FOR ENVIRONMENT.
Students of the world unite as a mighty force of minute individuals to preserve our precious planet.
The pledge
We the students of the world are together and in one mind , aware of the ecological imbalance caused by human interference convinced that the crisis could be averted by our determination and will. We therefore pledge, irrespective of caste , color, class, nationality or religion to stand , to struggle and conserve nature and its resources, for we are part of them as they are of us.
IT'S ORIGIN

The Students movement for preservation of environment, or SMPE as it's popularly called, was founded in 1986 by Mr. I. P. Santiago, an English and Geography teacher and lecturer at The Cathedral Composite PU College and High School, Bangalore. Mr.Santiago's deep concern for the environment and the damage being done to the environment, was the reason for the birth of SMPE.
His interest in the environment began when he was just a small boy, having grown up in Chittur, next to the forest. He was fascinated by the plants and ants, and would spend hours in the forest watching them. His interest was manifested in later walks of life as he obtained degrees in botany and biology.
As William Worsworth in his poem "The Tables Turned" says --"Let Nature be your teacher". Mr. Santiago also truly believed so.
The idea behind the SMPE was to group students who were interested in helping the environment. World Students Day for Environment was declared in 1992, and has been observed across the world by students in countries as far as Brazil.
Let's connect.
